Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A remarkable pottery bowl presenting a rounded bottom, concave walls, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a trio of petite legs in the form of downward facing zoomorph heads. Adorned in hues of black, gray, red, and beige, the ancient vessel showcases a complex decorative program comprised of several striated and geometric motifs. Each animal head displays a pointed snout with a wide, slightly open mouth, a round nose, a heavy brow, and nubbin ears. Openwork slits further embellish each leg, allowing a petite ball of clay on the interior of each to produce a rattling sound when shaken. Size: 6.7" Diameter x 3.5" H (17 cm x 8.9 cm)

Still functions as a rattle. Minor losses and chipping to rim and zoomorph ears. Repaired with restoration and repainting. Expected nicks as shown. Otherwise, excellent with nice pigments and manganese deposits.
