Description

H. Bogart SP from "All Through The Night," Pic Between "Maltese Falcon" & "Casablanca"

A photograph signed by Golden Age of Hollywood actor Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957), as "Humphrey Bogart" in red pen near center top. No date, no place, but probably ca. 1942. The black and white glossy photo shows minor expected surface wear, including a few wrinkles near the top, one only just touching the "p" of Bogart's signature. Else near fine. Displayed above an engraved plaque with pertinent biographical and filmography information. Matted and framed behind glass, not examined out of the frame. The sight size of the photo is 9.25" x 7.5" while the overall framed size is 17.625" x 22.5" x 1.375."

The signed photograph was a publicity still from the Warner Brothers feature-length film "All Through the Night" (1942). The photo depicts Bogart at left, German-born actress Kaaren Verne (1918-1967) at the center, and Oscar-nominated character actress Jane Darwell (1879-1967) at right. The cross-genre movie could best be categorized as a spy thriller. In it, Bogart played "Gloves" Donahue, a gambler who unwittingly foils a Nazi fifth-columnist plan to blow up a battleship in New York Harbor. His mother, "Ma" Donahue, is played by Darwell, and a Jewish singer named Uda Hammell / Leda Hamilton is portrayed by Verne. (Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, and a very young Jackie Gleason also co-star!)

"All Through The Night" was released on January 10, 1942. Bogart's immediately preceding film was "The Maltese Falcon," the crime drama blockbuster which had hit theatres three months earlier. Bogart would go on to film two other pictures, "The Big Shot" and "Across the Pacific," before signing up as morose bar owner Rick Blaine in "Casablanca." Released in November 1942, nearly a year after "All Through The Night," "Casablanca" earned Bogart his first of three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor.
