Allen Ginsberg was one of the leading intellectuals of the 1950s Beat Generation that also included Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Gregory Corso. Ginsberg's counterculture poetry railed against the stifling conformity of postwar America. Like other Beatniks in his circle, Ginsberg embraced Eastern religions. He also advocated self-expression in all forms, including sexuality. This was most notable in Ginsberg's first major poem collection, "Howl and Other Poems." Published by San Francisco's City Lights Bookstore in 1956, "Howl and Other Poems" was promptly banned for obscenity, though a California state judge later ruled that it had redeeming value.
