One of best of the best Catawba Valley large bulbous storage jars that one can find. Circa 1850-70. Maybe upstate SC. The condition is overall impressive. Melted glass decoration off both so expertly extruded strap handles. On one side the glass is flowing free and it's more modest off the other handle. The glaze is a dark alkaline that mostly covers the notable, but covered in glaze pair of incised decorative lines on the upper shoulder. Stands a healthy 19" by 14".

Overall amazing condition as noted for the scarcity of such an example. UPDATE ON CONDITION: There is a professionally restored horizontal body crack that crawls around jar a third, almost halfway, that gradually goes downward. At 2 locations there are vertical lines (also restored & each 5-6" long, that simply go down to the base edge, the 2nd is the end point for the horizontal line). The issue that can be confusing upon inspection is that this pot was once painted with some type of possibly white paint. There was a very subpar attempt at paint removal (possibly due to the body crack), this leads to what appears to be restoration to upper portion (incorrect) that is easily scratched off (under black light this faint layer is easily observable on the upper portions of the jar & handles-the handles are fully intact & original too). As already noted there are only handful minor glaze surface flakes that are primarily on the inside lip (and a few on outside lip surface).
