Description
**First Time At Auction**
South Asia, India, ca. mid-19th century CE. A cast-brass horse and rider figurine with a pair of iron axles suspended within both the front and rear hooves. The horse is adorned with finely delineated reins, saddle, and bridle, and the cap of each wheel is accentuated with a rosette flower. The rider straddles the broad back upon a finely etched saddle blanket, as if part of a formal procession or parade. Votive horse toys like this example were left as offerings at a temple since the gift of a horse elevated one's standing with the gods, and equine figurines were more cost-effective for less-wealthy families to donate. The wheeled horses not only had religious significance, but also functioned as toys to occupy children while their parents attended worship. Size: 5" L x 4.5" W x 6.5" H (12.7 cm x 11.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
