Description
This is a very rare Gaddang bachelor basketry hat/Saklong or Soklong. This finely woven basketry cap was created over a wood base and decorated with glass beads. Giant butterfly shaped clam shells hang suspended from each side and a cord of braided human hair acts as the support strap and is adorned with glass beads. The Gaddang basket hat is purely aesthetic, as its tiny size does not allow it to be worn as a normal cap. The hat measures 4 x 4 inches the baskets and shells. Early 20th Century. Provenance: Collected in situ mid 20th century and was Part of the permanent display at the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora , Indiana until it closed in 2019.
