Description
Very rarely encountered, a type made for guerilla commanders of the revolutionary era during the Diaz Revolt (1876-1880,) likely in Oaxaca. The steel hilt well-forged, displaying Spanish Colonial characteristics; notably the small, cylindrical pommel and vestigial cup with knucklebow placed above the guard, finely inlaid with engraved silver to the obverse and brass to the reverse. The grip of two sections of horn. The fine, handwrought-made blade lightly curved and single-edged, and engraved to either side, at the right the owner’s name, MIGUEL LOPEZ amongst complex vinework, and at the left, a presentation: POR F.C. MARZO 20 DE 1903. C. 1880. Minor wear. The potential connection between this sword and the Oxnard Strike of March 23, 1903 is worthy of further research. Overall length 96cm. Condition II
