Mexican War-era Ames Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber
Mexican American War
35.5" curved single edged blade with 26" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.25" wide at ricasso. Overall length 41.25". 5.5" hilt with cast brass two-branch guard and knuckle bow and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wood grip covered in leather and with 19 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso marked in three lines N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/1846 and obverse ricasso marked US/NWP. Pommel cap with NWP inspection. Includes a steel scabbard with two suspension rings and no visible inspection on the drag.
Condition
Very good. Blade with some bright polish and showing scattered surface oxidation and freckled discoloration. Markings clear. Guard with a golden patina. Grip with some wear to the leather and minor flaked loss. Wire intact, throat washer present. Scabbard chemically cleaned to a dull gray with scattered pinpricking and some minor dings.
