19th C. Bronze of an 18th C. German Hessian Grenadier, dressed in a field uniform. Includes flintlock musket, grenade pouch, grenade lighter on the cross sash. Mitre cap shows flaming ordnance symbol. Signed on base by "Gladenback Sohn Hermann" (German 1827-1918). 15 1/2" tall. Note: 30,000 Hessian mercenaries were hired by the British to fight the Americans in the Revolutionary War. 17,000 were killed in battles with 100's more captured as prisoners. After the war, over 50% stayed or returned to America. The Hessian forces were greatly feared due to their brutal tactics and expertise with explosives. Shipping: In-House Shipping Offered

Top of mitre cap is slightly bent, minor wear to bronze patina. Probably was mounted on a marble base at one time.
