We've seen the severed heads, the melting flesh, the cracked-open craniums, the gaping wounds, the injured eyes, the torn-out hearts. At some point, even the most avid horror hound starts to wonder — was this stuff really so great for kids? Was Dr. Wertham really the dour scold he's made out to be? Or were these mags evidence that, as DC do-gooder Green Arrow remarked years later in a different context, "Something is wrong! ...Some hideous moral cancer is rotting our very souls!"
"Within a decade of its birth... the comic book had become a site for the display of atrocities. Something had crept inside the most recent and childish of American story forms, making it almost unrecognizable. Opened to any page, the comic book now displayed scenes that might have come from Hiroshima or Auschwitz." — Tom Englehardt, The End of Victory Culture: Cold War America and the Disillusioning of a Generation. Basic: 1995, p. 97.
