Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan area, Tarascan culture, ca. 1200 to 1524 CE. A fabulous pottery bowl enveloped in burnt sienna hued slip and boasting a mesmerizing, maze-like design in cream and orange pigment. Showcasing a minimalist silhouette of a planar base and slanted walls that rise to a broad rim, the vessel is highly decorated on its interior, featuring a central quatrefoil comprised of spiraling motifs, while several linear and dotted horizontal bands encompass the walls. Alternatively, the exterior is left bare. Size: 8.8" Diameter x 1.8" H (22.4 cm x 4.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
