Andrew Carnegie LS "cheque for one hundred pounds" for a Fellow Scot
Industrialist and Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) Typed Letter Twice Signed, “Andrew Carnegie”, 1p, on his personal stationery, 7.75” x 9.75”, New York, January 16, 1899. Expected mailing folds, ink show-through, scattered foxing, else near fine with bold signatures. Accompanied by original envelope.
Carnegie writes to a Mr. Alexander Halliday of Yonkers, New York, in full, “I was only too happy to send you a cheque for one hundred pounds. It was a privilege and I heartily congratulate you upon the opportunity you have had to make an investment which will lead you to make higher dividends sure than ever you made in your life.” Scotland-born Carnegie concludes his letter with a handwritten exclamation, “Scotland forever”. At verso, Carnegie adds handwritten instructions to send 100 pounds to a fellow individual of Scottish descent. Andrew Carnegie checks are non-extant, with this letter as close to a signed check as one will find for the business magnate. Carnegie’s specific instructions read, in part, "check No 316 Jany 3/99…The Royal Bk Scotland…Pay a a Halliday…one hundred pounds…”
