Confederate Major General David R. Jones Signed Carte de Visite
Measuring 2.25" x 3.75", Charleston, South Carolina, undated. A standing studio portrait of Jones, dressed in his military uniform. Signed on verso, "D. R. Jones Major General", along with a Quinby & Co. backstamp. The card has light edge wear and faint foxing. Minor soiling on verso. Boldly signed.
David Rumph Jones (1825-1863) graduated from West Point in 1846 and served in the Mexican-American War. When the Civil War broke out, Jones was appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. He commanded a brigade in Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard's Confederate Army of the Potomac at the First Battle of Bull Run and later a brigade under Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder in the Peninsula Campaign. He also fought at the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Antietam. Jones' health began to decline after learning of the death of his brother-in-law, Union colonel H.W. Kingsbury. This, coupled with the strain of campaigning, aggravated his already weak heart, and Jones died in January 1863.
