Description

Benjamin Disraeli ALS as Chancellor of the Exchequer

A 3pp autograph letter signed by future British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) as "B. Disraeli" at the bottom of the third page. Written on October 18, 1852 at "D.S.," or Disraeli's offices on Downing Street, London, England. On bifold mourning stationery. Expected paper folds and isolated faint ink impressions. A later paper strip, perhaps added to conceal prior mounting traces, is discretely located verso along the letter's left edge. Else near fine. 4.625" x 7.125."

Benjamin Disraeli, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, hastily penned this letter to John Benward Travers (ca. 1803-1887), a Cambridge University alum who served as vicar of Mumby and Alford in Lincolnshire, on the eastern coast of England. This letter is listed as #2428 in the published collection of Disraeli's correspondence edited by M.G. Wiebe, "Volume VI, Benjamin Disraeli Letters, 1852-1856" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, Inc.), p. 173-174. See this book for further details and some interesting editorial notes.

I have been unwilling to reply to yr letter by the hand of a Secretary, but am so much pressed with affairs, at this time, that I cannot enter into the details, wh: wd afford you any materials for calculating the chance, wh: I have of serving you. I must, therefore, confine myself on the present occasion, to the expression of my good wishes.

Benjamin Disraeli served as Chancellor of the Exchequer between February and December 1852 in the Conservative government of Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby. During his tenure, Disraeli is credited with changing the income tax and lowering the tax on tea. Benjamin Disraeli would serve two terms as British Prime Minister in 1868 and between 1874-1880. He devoted 44 years of service to Parliament and was one of Queen Victoria's most cherished advisers.
