Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca to Huari transition period, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A collection of 4 camelid bones (llama or alpaca) that are carved into tools for use as awls, weaving implements, or as spatulas. Scoops and spatulate shaped implements may have been used for extracting lime and partaking in the preparation and consuming of hallucinogenic substances. Size of longest: 8.25" L x 0.75" W (21 cm x 1.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Natural ossification and abrasions. Stable hairline fissure on one bone and chip along periphery to another, otherwise intact. Two are highly polished with a nice patina.
