Description
George Walton autograph letter signed ("Geo Walton"). One page, 7.75" x 12.25", Savannah, [Georgia]; August 7, 1784. Docketed. George Walton writes to Nathanael Greene, welcoming him back to Georgia after the Revolutionary War. Letter of Walton to former General Nathaniel Greene (1742-1786), who was returning to Georgia from his home state of Rhode Island. The letter reads, in full: "I have heard but this moment of your return to your late great theatre of action, and I cannot lose that in expressing my gratulations. From some information I had some time since received, I feared your health was too much on the decline, owing to a mis-tep. Your coming to the South-ward at this time, would contradict the report. The regard you have for this country, and the grateful return the people always make to you will not permit you to return to the North-Eastward before you see us, than whom no one can be more ardent than, Dear Sir, Your most obedient And very Hble. Servt." Signed, "Geo Walton". After General Greene resigned his commission in late 1783, he returned to Rhode Island. Facing a large amount of debt, however, he relocated to the South. He turned his focus on the plantations he had been awarded during the war and made his home at the Mulberry Grove Plantation outside of Savannah, Georgia. In this letter, Walton, having just heard of Greene's plans, sends his congratulations to the former general for his return to the South, where he was famous for his military exploits during the Revolutionary War. The letter is accompanied by a hand-colored engraving of Greene by J. B. Forrest. George Walton (1749-1804), born in Virginia, was a founder of the U.S. and a signer of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Georgia. He also served as the second governor of Georgia. Walton worked almost exclusively on Georgia state politics in the 1780s. He served as chief justice (1783-1789), commissioner to negotiate a treaty with the Cherokee Nation in 1783, member of the Augusta Board of Commissioners (1784 and 1785), and commissioner to settle the border dispute between South Carolina and Georgia in 1786. In November 1795, Walton was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the incumbent; he served in that position until February 20, 1796. Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) was born into a prosperous Quaker family in Rhode Island. He served as a major general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He is known for his successful command in the southern theater of the war. Condition: Window mounted. Two pieces of paper attachment at two corners on verso. Light scattered soiling, chiefly concentrated at fold. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
