Description
Daniel Morgan autograph letter signed ("Danl Morgan"). One page, 6.5" x 8", "Saratoga", [his estate in Northern Virginia]; July 16, 1783. Addressed to "Colo [James] Wood". Brigadier Daniel Morgan requests an update regarding the subsistence pay he had yet to receive. Daniel Morgan (circa 1735-1802), a veteran of the French and Indian War, was commissioned captain of a company of Virginia riflemen in July 1775. Morgan took part in the invasion of Quebec, where he was captured on December 31, 1775. He was exchanged in the fall of 1776 and went on to participate in the battles of Saratoga and Cowpens, at the latter of which Morgan overcame a superior British force by his effective use of cavalry. He was promoted to brigadier general in October 1780. In this letter, the war all but officially over, Morgan is back at his home in Virginia (named after the Saratoga victory) and writes to Colonel James Wood regarding his lack of pay and requests to be kept informed of General Benjamin Lincoln's reply. It reads, in full: "I expected you would have calld [sic] on your Return from Frederickburg [sic] but imagine you were too much hurried. I will thank you to inform me in a line by Peter what Genl Lincoln said to my Letter & what he has done with Regard to my pay for subsistence; as I believe I am the only officer in the line unpaid." Signed, "Danl Morgan." Col. James Wood (1741-1813) served as the governor of Virginia from 1796 to 1799. Morgan, remembered today as one of the American Revolution's most respected tacticians, was called on by President Washington to command the Virginia militia under General Harry "Light Horse" Lee in 1794 to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania. The letter is accompanied by a vignette engraving of Morgan by G. R. Hall and an engraved portrait titled "Morgan's Rifleman" by Selmar Hess. Condition: Thin strip of paper attachment on verso along the right side, presumably indicating prior mounting. Uneven upper edge with block of toning at upper margin. Light scattered soiling and foxing. Later ink annotation to address leaf. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
