Description
AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, eight alphabet and numeral rows segmented by bands of decorative stitching, dated "1836" in third row and signed "SA Mangum." in fifth row, lower edge featuring verse of "To please my friends Ind- / -ulgent eye / My needle with delight I ply", flanked by crossed flower motifs, all encompassed by a scrolling floral vine border with chain-link inner and outer borders. Housed under glass in a later molded wood frame. Dated 1836. 16 5/8" SQ sight, 18 1/8" SQ overall.
Catalogue Note: The identity of "SA Mangum" is not confirmed, but two possible candidates are Sallie Alston Mangum (1825-1896) of Orange, North Carolina or Sarah Ann Mangum (b. about 1827) of Connecticut.

Condition
Mostly in good visual condition with several holes having repairs to most, some thread with fading and fugitive color, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
