Description
East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A lovely pair of pottery female attendants, both elegantly dressed in floor-length robes, elaborate updos, and liberal remains of white, black, and orange pigments. The first wears her hair centrally parted as she rests both hand atop her protruding belly and faces forward; her round visage displaying slender eyes, straight brows, a flattened nose, and pursed lips. Alternatively, the other woman holds a petite object to her torso and bows her head, gazing downward with a serene countenance. Size of larger: 3" W x 10.5" H (7.6 cm x 26.7 cm)
The larger figure has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
More petite figure has had head reattached with some chipping and minor losses along break line. Both have minor repairs with light restoration to bases and possible chips to coiffures, as well as some nicks, softening of details, and abrasions, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, both are excellent with nice remaining pigments and rich earthen deposits. Larger has TL holes to base and back of head, under proper right top knot.
