Item Details
Description
Peace with America.- In the House of Commons on Wednesday 27th February, 1782, The Right Honourable General Conway moved a Resolution..., single sheet broadside, printed in red and black, contempoprary ink inscription to verso, a few short tears, minor soiling at edges, folds, [ESTC T108084], folio (524 x 396mm.), Printed for J. Stockdale, 1782.

⁂ Very rare. No copies traced at auction. ESTC lists copies at BL, John Carter Brown and New York State libraries only. The 'ayes' "For Peace with America" are listed in red and include Charles James Fox, Edmund Burke and William Wilberforce; the 'noes' in black lost the vote by 19 thus precipitating the fall of Lord North's government, leading to Rockingham's short-lived second term as Prime Minister (he died in early July 1782) and then his successor Lord Shelburne, who finally succeeded in securing peace with America in April 1783. The debate of 27th February can therefore be seen as one of the major catalysts for advancing the terms with which America fully and finally achieved independence.
