Description
This is an authentic example of the classically designed diving helmet prevalently made in Japan and Korea during the 20th Century. We are unsure of the manufacturer as no names or ID plate was applied to this helmet. This is a 3 light 12 bolt style (three window and twelve studs on the breastplate) with a copper body and brass hardware.
This helmet was likely used for many years. Numerous shallow working dents on the bonnet exhibit the use it received. The breastplate on the divers right side is pushed in causing the bonnet to appear at a slight angle. All the glass is intact. 12 wing nuts and all four of the brails are present. The divers left side window frame is slightly pushed in. Inside the bonnet the original air vents are still in place. The bonnet and breastplate thread together just as they should.
The helmet has a wonderful patina. The unmistakable look and feel of a helmet that spent years underwater is very strong with this classic piece of diving history! A visual cue to how the helmet was constructed can be seen on the bonnet. A clear welding line can be seen going around the peak of the bonnet. This indicates the helmet was hand formed rather than being spun copper.
The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
