“Andrew Carnegie” Letter with Excellent Content

ANDREW CARNEGIE, American Industrialist and Humanitarian.
Typed Letter Signed, “Andrew Carnegie,” on personal, engraved letterhead, November 17, 1913, New York, 10.75” x 8.25,” Extremely Fine. Addressed to John A. Stewart of New York City and marked “Private.” Carnegie writes: “I am very sorry, but I cannot possibly attend the Richmond Meeting, as intended. The Carnegie Veterans, about forty in number, have their Thirteenth Annual Dinner with us in our home on Friday the fifth of December. They come from all quarters, and I must of course be here. They are my former partners. I can write a strong letter to Mr. Dunlop, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, which I hope you will accept as the best I can do. In addition to this, the truth is I have had such a strenuous time abroad this year that I must obey my doctor’s orders and run not the slitest risk of exposure of overwork. I enter upon my seventy-ninth year in a few days. We have had the Peace Endowment meetings for two days last week, and a banquet at home for them. This week we have the University Directors of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and a reception; also the meeting of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Not an idle day. I really must appeal to your well-known humane instinct, and pray explain fully to the good people of Richmond.” Normal folds, one passing lightly through one letter of the signature, and a check mark at the top of the page. Boldly signed in dark brown ink. Excellent content!
