Description
Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Donald Francis Mason of Patrol Squadron Eighty Two (VP-82) was stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland. Flying a Lockheed PBO-1 Hudson, 28-year old Mason was flying daily patrols over 'Torpedo Alley' and on Jan. 28, 1942 spotted and bombed a German U-boat which he claimed left a trail of oil as it sank. He sent the triumphant signal 'Sighted sub sank same' which caught the attention of the press internationally. T.L.S. 1p. 4to. on Fleet Air Wing Two letterhead, June 13, 1952 mentioning postage for a book he was apparently to return to an admirer and adding that ace and Squadron Commander William G. Widhelm would sign a photo for the man as well. Fine.
