Description
5th-6th century A.D. A ceramic oil lamp, D-shaped in plan with conical handle at the apex, central vent and raised rim, raised border to the discus, five nozzles to the straight edge and low-relief ornament. Cf. Kaufman J.C., Deutsch, R., Haneroth Halalou: My Collection of Oil Lamps from the Land of Israel, Jaffa, 2012, p.229-230, 816-817 (similar lamps with 11 nozzles). 153 grams, 11 cm long (4 1/4 in.). Acquired 1979-1999. London collection of the late Mr S.M., thence by descent. The general form and decoration of this lamp are quite similar to the ‘Samaritan type’ lamp of the 5th century CE with five holes, identified as a Hanukkah lamp, sold by Christie's on June 8, 2004 (lot 77, realized $26,290). It was produced within a workshop in Byzantine Judaea-Samaria. It should be noted that the 'Samaritan' type designation refers to region and workshop and does not suggest these lamps were actually employed by Samaritans. The cross symbol visible on the left corner of the lamp shows that it was used by the Christians. [No Reserve]
