Description
Camp Meade Fire Zouaves Photo 4th Regiment of the Phil., Incredibly Rare Civil War Piece!
The original photo measures 11.5" x 8.5" and is mounted onto a matte with an overall size of 16" x 13". In fair condition with minor staining and expected folds and creases. Evidence of previous mounting deaccessioned from the Westport Historical Society on verso. Included towards the bottom of the matte are two notations in separate unknown hands: "Second above arrow Franklin Shenn Ed's Father" etched in blue ink and "William" written in pencil.Â
Named after the Union General who famously defeated Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg, Camp George G. Meade served as a training outpost for the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry. The Fire Zouave Regiments consisted of firemen which were first recruited by Union Officer Elmer E. Ellsworth for their bravery, physical fitness, and discipline. The uniforms of the men depicted are also extremely unique and mimicked the battle garments of North African and French light infantrymen called "Zouaves", hence why this untraditional battalion was given the nickname the "Philadelphia Fire Zouaves".Â
After an extensive search, we were unable to find another example of this photo making it an incredibly rare find. The identities of the soldiers in the photograph are unknown but present a worthy research project.
