Description
Rare Original 1860's Photograph of Auburn University. This image was taken during the Civil War of Confederate soldiers from nearby Camp Beauregard and Camp Johnson standing in front of the Main Building at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College at Auburn, Alabama. Soldiers from both camps used the college as parade grounds. This building was constructed in 1856 for $85,000. The facility was closed from 1861-1866 for the Civil War. Old Main Hall and others were converted into hospitals for the Confederate soldiers wounded in Atlanta. In 1864, the Texas's state legislature paid to convert Old Main Hall into a convalescent hospital for their wounded soldiers and it was called, "Texas Hospital." It would burn down in June 24,1887 and in 1888 William J. Samford Hall would be built in its place. Old Main Hall's building was located at what is now 182 South College Street, Auburn University. Actual photograph measures 7 1/4" X 9 1/4". Photograph with margin measures 10" X 12". Frame measures 12" X 15". From the Estate of Dr. Ronald Terhune.
