Rare reflecting circle by Lenoir of Paris, Circa 1820. As described by the Smithsonian, the engraved inscription "Lenoir of Paris 10" is that of Etienne Lenoir (1744 - 1932). The French craftsman who made Borda's first instrument was used in the calculation of longitudes, indispensable for determining a ships exact position at sea until the octant's invention in the 18th century. Lenoir produced instruments for this reflecting circles inventor, Charles De Borda. Dimensions; 12"Diameter, 3 lbs.
