Germanic Silver Mounted Cutlass / Short Saber or Cuttoe
c. Late 17th-Early 18th Century Possible French and Indian to Revolutionary War Use, Rare Germanic Silver Mounted Cutlass / Short Saber or Cuttoe, Blade Dated "15-53", Very Fine.
This handsome Germanic Sword measures 28" overall in length, and was likely made with an earlier style 22.5" curved blade. No scabbard. Its current blade has even light salt & pepper pitting, and is hand-engraved with the "Soligen Running Wolf" design that is flanked by the date "15-53" twice, on both sides used as the replacement blade. A fine Silver Mounted Hilt with classic early decorative form in the crossguard with bulbous quillion ends is slightly loose, which also has a small silver finial tip, a design popular in the second half of the 17th century. This Cuttoe / Sword was meant to hang from a belt, being popular for hunting and use as a military weapon. The narrow counterguard and flattened oval pommel are also typical of this period. Rich brown Stag Horn grip. A fantastic example. .
