Edgefield District, SC, Decorated Storage Jar, Attributed Collin Rhodes Factory

Shaw's Creek, 1811-1881, approximately 6 gallon ovoid form with applied handles, olive-green alkaline glazed stoneware, both sides decorated in kaolin slip. One side is decorated with facing flower stems, the opposite side decorated with the dated 1854 above a small flower, the whole encircled by a looping wreath. The jar retains its original accumulated aged surface.
18 3/4 x 12 x 12 in.
It is noted that John W. Seigler purchased the Colin Rhodes pottery foundry around 1853. This jar, Lot 120, while dated 1854 might possibly signify a transitional piece from one proprietor to the next. There are no known Seigler slip decorated examples, and it is unknown who the turners or decorators were at these pottery foundries. That said, this jar may appear to be the only known transitional dated and decorated example to come to market.

Some areas of crazing; a tight hairline from the base extends upwards 4 in. and then branches into a "T" form also going downwards partially across the underside; expected base roughness; small flat flake to one handle. Examined with UV light.
