Oliver Ellsworth ADS for "Repairs done to the Colony Arms" 1mo. After Lexington
A handwritten pay order signed "O. Ellsworth" and addressed to John Lawrence Esq., Treasurer. Countersigned by J. Seymour as Comptroller. With docketing on verso, No. 4125, with the receipt of money. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 3.5", Hartford, dated May 8, 1776. Audited May 13, 1776. The document has flattened folds, light toning and foxing. There is a small tear at the bottom edge. Boldly signed.
In full: "Pay Jonathan Steel sum of Nineteen shillings for repairs done to the Colony Arms as &c. Auo. & charge Colony."
Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) was selected as a Connecticut delegate to the Continental Congress in 1777. He served on a number of committees, including the Committee of the Pay Table, which handled all of the military finances for the colony of Connecticut during the American Revolution. Ellsworth continued to serve in the Continental Congress until 1784, and later became Connecticut's first U.S. Senator (1789-1796). He finally rose to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1796 and served until 1800.
