Description
Pre-Columbian, South/Central Coast Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A rare, well-preserved wooden dish in the form of a duck, used in part of the preparation of snuff. The vessel sits on a petite base presenting thick walls that rise to a low, annular rim. A flared tail projects from 1 side, while the raised head with a flattened beak is at the other, each doubling as handles to the dish. Size: 9.5" W x 2.7" H (24.1 cm x 6.9 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-Eugene Lions collection, Geneve, Switzerland, collected 1960 to 2000

Chipping to tip of beak with losses to underside. Minor nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and excellent with light patina.
