Description
Original serigraph attributed to Frank L. Philips, a commercial illustrator from Denver, Colorado who was contracted by the Rio Grande to create advertising for the railroad. This scene depicts a Rio Grande passenger train exiting the famed Moffat Tunnel. Signed Philips in the lower right. Visible image measures 14 1/2" x 19 1/2". The image has distinct layers and textures of the different colors with each layer building upon the next. The base sky layers are thin enough that you can make out the texture of the artist board below. There are elements of the painting that have incredibly crisp lines such as the signature and the Rio Grande herald at the bottom which leads us to believe that this is possibly a serigraph with hand embellishments in certain areas. This piece is in good condition with a few minor issues. The most notable is a 1/2" chip in the right edge of the Rio Grande herald. A second 5/8" section of chipping exists below the Steam locomotive. There is also a small chip and small dent at the top edge along with minor chips in the mountain range and sky. The one benefit to these chips is that it does allow us to see the multiple layers of ink / paint used to create these images. See photos for best description.
