Description

Infamous Railroad Magnate Jay Gould Arranges a Meeting, ALS

1p of a bifolium, measuring 4.5" x 6.75", New York, dated December 30, 1878. Boldly signed "Jay Gould" and addressed to Hon. Thomas J. Brady. A brief note, setting up a meeting: "Call at Union Pacific Office 23 Nassau St at 10 o'clock Jany 2." With flattened mail folds and light soiling. Mat burn from display.

Jason "Jay" Gould (1836-1892) was an American railroad magnate and one of the "Robber barons" of the Gilded Age. He gained control of the Union Pacific Railroad Company in 1873, following the Panic of 1873. Six years later, he took over three more important railroad companies, including the Missouri Pacific Railroad, for a total control of 15% of the country's railroad tracks. His business practices made his one of the wealthiest men of the time, but also made him highly unpopular and widely seen as one of the greatest villains of the period.

Thomas Jefferson Brady (1839-1904) was an American Republican politician and second assistant postmaster-general under President Ulysses S. Grant. He was involved in the 19th century Star Route Scandal, where postal officials received bribes for awarding delivery contracts in the West and South, and although he was found guilty of defrauding the government, he ultimately saw no punishment.
