Description
Quarter plate size. Hand-colored outdoor scene daguerreotypes are rare. There are two buildings and a portion of a third. Each building has two stories. The grass is tinted green. The trees have been white-washed and there's uneven whitewash on the roof. There are wash bowls on the railing. At the top there is a blue sky caused by solarization. Split case.
POSSIBLY MILITARY & POSSIBLY VIRGINIA. This is a slight variant of a daguerreotype that was sold at a June 11, 2010 sale at Cowan's Auctions in Ohio. It looks like the same exact angle but the Cowan's daguerreotype did not have added color. Cowan's described theirs thusly: "Anonymous daguerreotype of two stone "barracks"-type buildings, each with a long porch and two equally spaced entry doors. A portion of a two story building is visible on the right hand edge of the plate. The image directly descended directly through the family of Confederate General William Mahone (1826-1895)... Mahone graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1847, and shortly thereafter began teaching at the Rappahannock Military Academy. This image was clearly not taken at VMI, and we believe it may show faculty quarters at the Rappahannock Institute... Provenance: Descended directly in the Family of William Mahone." (Source: Cowan's Auctions.) Mahone taught at Rappahannock Institute from January 1848-July 1849. (Source: Wikipedia).
Please note: the daguerreotype we are offering came without provenance.
