Two Mantle Borders, Nazca. A pair of related borders from different mantles in the linked people design. These single needle knit alpaca weavings represent a difficult and time-consuming labor and are unique to the Nazca culture. One has been made with the standard black hair fringe which is mostly lost due to the corrosive nature of the black soot dyes. The other example has never had a hair fringe but instead was attached to a mantle as seen. The color arrangement is suspected of having a communicative nature. The expressions of the figures is reminiscent of work by Edvard Munch. Ex collection Jean Lions, Geneva, Switzerland since before 1980. Legally imported to the US in 2005.
