The nib is plated with 18 carat gold and 750 platinum. This limited edition pen was produced to celebrate medieval Italian history and the important role these republics played in the formation of the Italian state. The Antiche Repubbliche Marinare writing instruments are individually crafted from a solid bar of special Mediterranean Blue resin. It is detailed in sterling silver with engraved gonfalons of the four Maritime Republics in enamel.
In addition the body is covered with a sterling silver sleeve engraved with the four monuments symbolising the four cities: Amalfi Cathedral, the Lighthouse of Genoa, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Rialto Bridge of Venice. NIB: Platinum plated and flexible 18Kt 750 gold. It has a heart-shaped vent and is engraved with an ornamental figure and the inscription 'Millennium'. During the 9th and 10th centuries AD, the coasts of Mediterranean Europe, particularly Italy, were underground. They were under constant attack from Muslim raiders and pirates. To defend against these threats, the cities of Italy began to develop powerful navies. By the 11th century, the fleets of these Italian city-states had outnumbered those of the Muslims and began to go on the offensive.
These Italian Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean region were Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice and were called Italian Maritime Republics. These city states became wealthy through trade and established trade markets of lasting importance.
