Samuel Smucker was a notable 19th-century historian who published a variety of biographical works on American and exploration! One of his most notable subjects was Elisha Kent Kane and his arctic explorations. Kanes explorations have been some of the most popular stories of adventure since the 19th-century and Smuckers account was certainly a contributing factor to this. This book contains descriptions of Kanes experiences in Mexico as well as his voyages in Baffin Bay, and of course the Second Grinnell Expedition.

John S. Kidder, a private in the Watsonville Guards, 5th California Infantry during the American Civil War. The 5th Regiment California Volunteer Infantry spent its entire term of service in the western United States, attached to the Department of the Pacific and Department of New Mexico. Kidder survived the war was promoted to 2nd Sergeant when the unit was converted into that of the National Guard.
