Description
G. Washington's 3x Great-Grand-Niece Patty Willis Washington Attends a Party

A charming hand-painted figural place card belonging to Patty Willis Washington (1880-1971), the great-great great-grand-niece of 1st U.S. President George Washington (1732-1799). N.d., n.p. The place card depicts a woman dressed in the fashion of George Washington's era. It is obviously handmade as well as multi-media: the figure's face, hair, and petticoats are made of stock paper hand-painted with watercolor and whiting; her skirt is a silk damask fabric remnant; her headdress is made of lace, and she carries an applique floral arrangement. The place card border is hand-inscribed "Miss Patty Willis Washington." With an easel-style prop verso to keep it upright, near fine. Measures 3.625" x 4.25" x .5" standing on a table surface.

Patty Willis Washington was the sixth-generation descendant of John Augustine Washington (1736-1787), George Washington's younger brother. The generations separating George Washington from Patty Willis Washington traced through the paternal line can be seen below:

I. John Augustine Washington, brother of George Washington

II. Corbin Washington (1765-1799)

III. John Augustine Washington II (1789-1832)

IV. John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861)

Notable for being the aide-de-camp of General Robert E. Lee, killed at the 1861 Battle of Cheat Mountain, later the last private owner of Mount Vernon.

V. Lawrence Washington (1854-1920)

VI. Patty Willis Washington

Patty Willis Washington, along with her younger sister Anne Madison Washington (1882-1966) inherited many of the family's George Washington relics. The sisters made a sizable donation to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia in 1966.
