Rev War Surgeon Provides Receipt for Payment of Medical Bill

This receipt acknowledges payment of £1 for medicine provided by Dr. Philip Turner. Written by Turner, it is effectively signed twice. It may have been a part of the settlement of the estate of Joshua Chappel, for whom his son-in-law Ichabod Bosworth served as an executor.

Philip Turner (1740-1815) was born in Norwich, Connecticut, orphaned, and adopted by Dr. Elisha Tracy. He studied medicine with Tracy and married his daughter. In 1759, he was appointed an assistant surgeon for a provincial regiment that served at Fort Ticonderoga in the French and Indian War. He settled in Norwich and developed a medical practice. In 1775, he was the first Connecticut surgeon to reach Boston and he accompanied the Continental Army to New York in 1776. The following year, he was appointed the surgeon general of the military hospital for the Eastern Department, a position he held until 1780, when Congress reorganized the medical department. He served as a hospital physician and surgeon until resigning in 1781. He resumed private practice in Norwich before moving to New York City in 1800. He served as an army surgeon in New York City from 1809 until his death.

Ichabod Bosworth (1748-1818) was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, the son of David Bosworth and Mary Strong Bosworth. In 1770, he married Abigail Chappel (1747-1788), and they had seven children. He responded to the Lexington Alarm in 1775 as a serjeant in the 3rd Continental regiment. In 1776, he enlisted as an ensign in a battalion raised to reinforce General George Washington at New York City and participated in the Battle of White Plains. He was appointed a first lieutenant in 1777. After the war, he returned to Lebanon, where he served as one of the executors of the will of his father-in-law Joshua Chappel (1697-1786). Between 1797 and 1808, Bosworth and his family moved to Clinton County, New York, in the northeast corner of the state.
