Rev. War Funeral Oration Written by a Founder of Harvard Medical School & Rev War Surgeon
An historic Revolutionary War era funeral oration, by a Massachusetts military hero, John Warren. Titled "Dr. Warren's Eulogy on the Honourable Thomas Russell, Esq." Boston, 1796. Signed by William Henshaw. 46 pages including a musical Monody, size 6" x 7.5", wrappers, front end paper separating, fragile but very good condition.
Thomas Russell was an important Boston patriot and merchant, and a member of many local charitable organizations. He was also the owner of an extensive shipping and marine insurance business, and made a fortune speculating in Continental money. John Warren [1753-1815] was a renowned Boston doctor, a surgeon in the Continental Army during the Revolution, and a founder of the Harvard Medical School. He was the younger brother of Dr. Joseph Warren, who was killed at Bunker Hill.
This oration was signed by William Henshaw [1735-1820], a veteran of the French and Indian War, and Colonel of the 12th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Army. He served as Adjutant General under General Artemas Ward, and participated in the siege of Boston, the Battles of Long Island, and New York and in New Jersey, before leaving the army in 1777, and returning to his farm in Worcester.
