Item Details
Description
Stanley William Hayter (British, 1901-1988). "Night Moth" (Laurels Number One) - Engraving and aquatint in colors on laid paper. Edition 193/300. Publisher: Laurel Gallery, New York, 1946-1952. Signed and numbered in pencil on lower margin. A masterful abstraction by Stanley William Hayter presenting biomorphic shapes and a complex array of lines and planes embellished with striking orange, yellow, and magenta hues. A wonderful example by one of the 20th century's most important printmakers who was associated with Surrealism in the 1930s and Abstract Expressionism from the 1940s on. Size of plate mark: 5.875" L x 4.5" W (14.9 cm x 11.4 cm)

Known for his impressive technical innovations in printmaking, Stanley William Hayter experimented with transforming traditional black-and-white etching and engraving techniques through his Modernist lens. Hayter became linked to the Surrealist Movement after being introduced to Yves Tanguy and Andre Masson in Paris. During World War II, Hayter was living in exile in New York, and his style moved toward Abstract Expressionism. Soon thereafter, his style and technique as well as his theoretical writings on Automatism would influence many American artists, including Jackson Pollock. It was during this period that Hayter perfected his innovative technique for multicolor printing on a single plate and created avant-garde works like "Night Moth".
