Cased Waltham Watch Co 8-day ship chronometer, 3 inch dial with silvered bezel, gimbal mounted in a mahogany case, Up/Down Wind indicator, lid with engraved brass plate "US Shipping Board Ship Watch No 2208", with (2) case keys, fitted in padded wood box. The United States Shipping Board (USSB) was established as an emergency agency by the 1916 Shipping Act (39 Stat. 729), on September 7, 1916. The United States Shipping Board's task was to increase the number of US ships supporting the World War I efforts. The program ended on March 2, 1934.
