Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely pair of pottery vessels from West Mexico: a Colima jar and a Nayarit bowl. The bowl is slipped in a red and orange hue with a faint linear pattern across the exterior, and the jar is a deep umber hue with manganese deposits throughout. Pottery and vessels like these are some of the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they left no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and pottery effigies and wares such as this, full of offerings and possessions surrounding. Size of jar: 5.5" Diameter x 6.25" H (14 cm x 15.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
