Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels from the ancient Nayarit culture. First is a spherical jar with a round but stable base, a thick, flared rim, and linear motifs incised across the red-brown surfaces. The larger vessel is a bowl with a deep basin, a flat base, and a flared rim. The highly burnished, gray hued surfaces are decorated with red-painted linear motifs that course across the rim. Size (bowl): 6.9" W x 2.9" H (17.5 cm x 7.4 cm); (jar): 5.3" W x 4.8" H (13.5 cm x 12.2 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Jar repaired from 2 halves, with small loss along midsection as shown; bowl is intact and very good. Both pieces have minor abrasions and light encrustations, with fading to pigment on bowl, and softening to some incised details on jar. Nice preservation to motifs throughout. Old inventory labels beneath base of bowl.
