Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) was representative and senator from Massachusetts, president of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The ceremonies included an address by President Arthur, and by Winthrop (read by Governor Long), and a parade. The book includes letters from Ulysses Grant, Rutherford B.Hayes, Grover Cleveland, Hannibal Hamlin, W.A. Wheeler, William T. Sherman, and John Greenleaf Whittier, most of whom were in ill health and sent their regrets at not being able to attend.
