Rare Woodrow Wilson ALS On "Blessings of (His) New Office" as President of Princeton University

Woodrow Wilson as President of Princeton University ALS written to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert B. Stevens; dated November 26, 1902, Princeton, New Jersey. The ALS shows a softer side of future President Wilson, a side that was rarely on display. The letter is in fine condition with some evidence of prior mounting on verso, expected folds and slight foxing. Boldly signed by Wilson as "Woodrow Wilson." 6.75" x 10.75".

In full:

"My dear Friends,

For so I must call you, - Your kind letter came yesterday, with its enclosures, - a touching reminder of your irreparable loss, - a beautiful indication of humane and poetic feeling. It will give me peculiar pleasure to disburse this money, and some of the blessings of father and mother love ought surely to go with it. To see such things done is one of the blessings of my new office.

With warmest regard,

Cordially yours,

Woodrow Wilson"

Woodrow Wilson was a distinguished American leader who served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. He was born in Virginia in 1856 and prior to becoming President, he was a professor at Princeton University and the governor of New Jersey.

At Princeton, Wilson was a professor of jurisprudence and political economy, and his lectures and research on the federal government and the Constitution had a significant impact on American political thought. He was appointed the 13th president of Princeton in 1902.

In his time at Princeton, Wilson championed progressive ideals and was instrumental in reforming the university. He implemented a system of elective courses and introduced the preceptorial system, which is still in use today. He also promoted the development of the graduate school and was responsible for the modernization of the curriculum.

Wilson was an advocate for international peace, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 for his efforts in negotiating the Treaty of Versailles. He was also a driving force behind the establishment of the League of Nations.

After leaving the White House, Wilson returned to Princeton and served as a member of the Board of Trustees until his death in 1924. He left behind a legacy of progressive reform and international peace, and his contributions to Princeton University are still remembered today.
