Description
Wilson Appoints Stephen T. Bandy as Captain of Infantry Months Before Entering WWI
An appointment signed by Woodrow Wilson and countersigned by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker naming Stephen T. Bandy as Captain in the Infantry, December 16, 1916, Washington, D.C. Horizontally stamped by the Office of the Adjutant General on January 6, 1917 and signed by Henry P. McCain in top left corner. Partial-printed DS, measuring 15" x 19" and matted to the overall size of 19" x 23". Minor soiling, creasing, and document folds present throughout. Boldly signed by all!
A month earlier in November 1916, Wilson narrowly won reelection against Republican candidate Charles Evan Hughes, with a major angle of his campaign being that he had kept the United States out of war during his previous term. This would quickly change in April 1917, with Wilson declaring war against Germany on account of aggressive submarine warfare and the infamous interception of the Zimmerman Telegram.
