Intact Roman Glass Unguent - 7" Tall!
Intact Roman Glass Unguent - 7" Tall!
Item Details
Description
Late Rome, ca. 100 to 300 CE. Hand-blown glass vessel with a long neck and a piriform body on a flat base. The neck is pinched as it meets the body and the rim flares out from the neck. The glass is clear with areas of very faint rainbow iridescence, especially around the neck. Glassmakers in the Levant during the early first century BCE invented the technique of blowing glass through a hollow tube to inflate it; this technology came to Rome with the annexation of that area in 64 BCE. Glass blowing allowed the mass production of glassware throughout the Roman area of influence and it rapidly replaced pottery in the household. Size: 7"H x 2"W at its widest point.

Provenance: private East Coast collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
