Description
Originally listed at $350
Native American, North America, Eastern Woodland, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. An attractive axe head of rectangular form, smoothly hand-carved from a dark gray stone. The ancient implement presents a thick midsection that tapers to a sharp, inward-curving blade edge on 1 side and a blunt, slender butt at the other. Stone tools like this example could be used as handheld implements for a variety of ritualistic or utilitarian tasks such as scraping, cutting, digging, or they could be hafted onto handles for greater leverage. An inscription on 1 side of the stone indicates that it may have been found in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Size: 8" L x 2.3" W (20.3 cm x 5.8 cm)
Provenance: private Brevard, North Carolina, USA collection
