Description
Untouched Ames m1860 light cavalry saber, complete with its original metal scabbard. These 1860-dated “new pattern” examples are considered especially desirable, since a considerable number produced that year were sent to Virginia by order of then Secretary of War (later Confederate General) John B. Floyd right before the onset of hostilities in 1861. An older tag tied to the hilt of this example notes it came out of a “Lynchburg, Virginia” collection in the 1960s, suggesting it could have been in the batch sent south. A number of m1860 light cavalry sabers are documented as having been used by Confederate cavalrymen.
Beautiful specimen that has not been restored or cleaned. It exhibits a natural uniform patina and wear commensurate with age and real field use. Stamped with standard hallmarks and inspector marks “ADK” and “JH.”
[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Saber, Ames, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson]
